WWE: The Ultimate Warrior Passes Away

By Rodrigo McCance, Posted: 04/09/14 05:51AM EDT

The Ultimate Warrior, who legally changed his name to Warrior in 1993 (given name James Brian Hellwig) died after collapsing outside his Arizona hotel and was later pronounced dead at an Arizona area hospital.

Over the past weekend Warrior was inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame after years of bad blood between him and the company. He also made an appearance at Wrestlemania XXX and on Monday Night Raw where he adressed his fans and thanks them for everything that they have done for him.

Warrior's troubled relationship with WWE/f began after 1992 where he left the company over money issues, and while he would return sporadically, the troubled relationship would continue to be strained which ultimately resulted in WWE releasing 'The Self Destruction of The Ultimate Warrior' DVD. It seemed as if things had been buried over the weekend when Warrior was inducted into the Hall Of Fame and numerous photos surfaced of him online with Vince McMahon smiling.

Warrior rose to stardom relatively quickly in WWE capturing the Intercontinental Championship and then going on to defeat Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania VI for the WWF Championship. He became an iconic household name for his look and crazy nature. His performances were frenetic and he captured the imagination of millions of young fans who he refered to as 'Little Warriors'.

A WWE statement read "WWE is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of the most iconic WWE Superstars ever, The Ultimate Warrior"

Warrior's speech on Raw is made all the more poignant and haunting because of his death.

"No WWE talent becomes a legend on their own. Every man's heart one day beats its final beat. His lungs breathe their final breath. And if what that man did in his life what makes the blood pulse through the body of others and makes them bleed deeper and something larger than life then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized. By the story tellers, by the loyalty, by the memory of those who honor him and make the running the man did live forever. You, you, you, you, you, you are the legend makers of Ultimate Warrior. In the back I see many potential legends. Some of them with warrior spirits. And you will do the same for them. You will decide if they lived with the passion and intensity. So much so that you will tell your stories and you will make them legends, as well. I am The Ultimate Warrior. You are the Ultimate Warrior fans and the spirit of Ultimate Warrior will run forever."

The Ultimate Warrior is survived by his wife and two daughters. At the time of writing the cause of death is not known. He was 54 years old. He will be missed.
