New England Patriots Rumors: Jimmy Garoppolo Trade to Cleveland Browns Possible After RG3 Injury?
Jimmy Garoppolo performed well for the New England Patriots in Week 1, but his time as a starter might only last for four games. When his four-game suspension ends, Tom Brady is expected to start for the Patriots again, pushing Garoppolo back to the bench for the entire season unless something unexpected happens.
Garoppolo went 24-for-33 for 264 yards during their 23-21 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday night. His performance proved that he is a worthy successor to Brady when the veteran QB retires. However, his impressive showing also stirred speculation that the Patriots could use him as a trade bait this season.
Jimmy Garoppolo to Cleveland Browns
FanSided named the Cleveland Browns as possible destination for Garoppolo in the event the Patriots decide to trade the 24-year-old quarterback. The Browns are in dire need for quarterback after Robert Griffin III suffered a shoulder injury, which will likely end his season and probably his career as a Cleveland Brown.
Josh McCown is expected to start for the Browns in Week 2 against the Baltimore Orioles. However, McCown is not viewed as a long-term solution to their QB woes, while rookie Cody Kessler is not ready to take a big role. This leaves the Brown with no other choice but to give up assets to acquire a new signal caller.
The Browns could set their sights on the 2017 NFL Draft, where they could get Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson. But according to FanSided, Cleveland could also make a bold move and trade their first-round pick for a quarterback like Garoppolo.
"Hue Jackson's strong past work with quarterbacks, Garoppolo should appeal to Cleveland," FanSided noted. "Even with an analytics-driven front office that seems intent on accumulating draft picks, parting with some draft capital to acquire Garoppolo would be a risk worth taking for the Browns."
Earlier report from iSportsTimes also indicated that the Browns could consider getting Johnny Manziel back. However, the report pointed out that it is unlikely to happen. The Browns ditched Manziel after two tumultuous years in Cleveland, which was highlighted by his off-court issues.
