Ronda Rousey Next Fight: Dana White Assures 'Rowdy' Will Return by End of 2016
While Ronda Rousey has been reportedly sidelined for the rest of 2016, Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White believes she will be back before the year ends.
"Rowdy" has been shelved for almost a year now since she experienced the most devastating loss of her professional career. Rousey lost to former champion Holly Holm at UFC 193 in November. "The Preacher's Daughter" ended Rousey's two-year title reign by landing a left kick to the latter's jaw in the second round of their bout.
Rousey has already been scheduled for several comeback dates since her last fight, but none of these plans are seemingly coming to fruition. Most recently, she was expected to be back by November at UFC 205 when the promotion makes its return to New York City after the 20-year ban on mixed martial arts has been lifted.
However, these were also scrapped after Rousey had reportedly suffered a knee injury that requires surgery. White was already skeptical about her November return as far back as June but had made it final in late August. "She's definitely not fighting in New York," White said via an August 28 report by MMA Weekly.
As for her possible opponents, Rousey has not been given a definite name just yet. But as stipulated by White himself, she would be getting an immediate shot upon her return. Given the said condition, she will then be slated to face current champion Amanda Nunes, the second holder of the women's 135-pound belt in 2016.
With the possibility of Rousey vs. Nunes now on the table, White has also changed his tune about the former's return date. Speaking to Esporte Espetacular, as reported by Bloody Elbow, White foresees an earlier return for Rousey than expected.
"Yes, there's a big chance that Ronda Rousey will fight Amanda Nunes and I'm very confident that Ronda will probably fight before the end of the year," White said. Rousey currently holds a record of 12-1 with all wins coming via stoppage.
