The New England Patriots have been hit hard by player injuries, curiously targeting its quarterbacks. That, of course, excludes Tom Brady, who is serving out his four-game suspension tied up to the Deflategate scandal.

Jimmy Garoppolo has been filling in nicely until he suffered that right shoulder injury. Hence, the Patriots are now left to bank on third stringer Jacoby Brissett, who will likely start this Thursday when the Pats meet the Houston Texans.

Last Quarterback Standing

The New England Patriots are hoping that Brissett can hold the fort for the meantime, but there is another aspect they need to consider. This is the fact that Brissett is the lone active quarterback on the team, which may force the Pats to explore options.

Even if Brady does return from his suspension, there is no doubt that the Pats need to fill in some roster spots. There are disgruntled quarterbacks and free agents the team could target, but an interesting dish from analyst Boomer Esiason injects retired Peyton Manning into the fray.

Manning retired last NFL season and has all the time in the world. Filling in could make sense only if the future Hall of Famer is interested in suiting up for the Pats.

It seems like a crazy pitch and something that may unlikely happen. It may all boil down to Manning’s level of interest, as well as his health status. After 17 seasons, Manning’s arm strength wasn’t there anymore so considering him will need proper evaluation.

The pitch is seen more of as a last resort with the Patriots needing help at quarterback. Brady may be returning soon, but the fact is that the team lacks a proven and reliable backup, which is now Brissett.

Garoppolo could still return to the fold but as a backup. His full state of health is still in question as we speak. With the sensitive options, Bill Belichick will need to weigh in heavily if it is indeed time to dig in the potential quarterback free agents to aid his cause.
