NBA Rumors: Chris Paul Joining Forces With New Orleans Pelicans Star Anthony Davis?
With the consideration of the Los Angeles Clippers to trade star guard Chris Paul, the New Orleans Pelicans could be his next destination, especially if they fail to win the title in the upcoming season.
The 31-year-old veteran guard is set to enter free agency in 2017, and the Pelicans have shown interests in signing him as far back as January of this year. In a report by Johnny Lousiana for Fansided's Pelican Debrief, the interest in Paul is mainly rooted to the desire of head coach Alvin Gentry to have a player with high basketball IQ to man the point.
While Paul may not have that high basketball IQ, as Louisiana had pointed out, he is still a good fit for the team. Gentry had worked with him previously, when the latter served as one of the assistant coaches for the Clippers.
"Chris Paul is nothing if not an extremely high IQ player. Maybe he isn't capable of nightly 30 point outbursts the same way a Kyrie, Lillard, or Curry are, but with Anthony Davis locked down for the next five years that isn't what the Pelicans need from their main ball handler," an excerpt from Louisiana's report reads.
It seems like there remains a growing interest within the Pelicans staff to sign Paul months after they have shown interest. As pointed out in a recent report by Mason McFee for Fansided's Sir Charles in Charge, Paul's return to New Orleans could help boost the team's chances for a better standing in the Western Conference division for the upcoming season.
Paul was selected fourth overall by the then New Orleans Hornets during the 2005 NBA draft. After spending six seasons with New Orleans, he was involved in a three-team trade that initially sent him to the Lakers. The said deal, however, was nullified by the NBA, who was then the owner of the Hornets.
Paul was then traded to the Clippers, where he formed a deadly duo with Blake Griffin. Last season, he averaged 19.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 10.0 assists. In the event he moves to New Orleans, Paul will have a new pick-and-roll partner in Anthony Davis.
