New York Knicks Season Preview: New Faces, New System, New Hope for NY
Entering the training camp before the new NBA season starts, only 6 players -- Lou Amundson, Carmelo Anthony, Kyle O'Quinn, Kristaps Porzingis, Lance Thomas, and Sasha Vujacic -- remains from the core of last season's New York Knicks. Of these names, only Anthony (Small Forward) and Porzingis (power forward) are sure to start for the team.
Knicks New Faces
Who are the new faces on the Knicks roster this coming season? There's Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah and Justin Holiday from the Chicago Bulls. Then there's Courtney Lee from Charlotte Hornets and Brandon Jennings from the Orlando Magic.
Four of them -- Willy Hernangómez (Real Madrid), Mindaugas Kuzminskas (Unicaja, Žalgiris), Chasson Randle (ČEZ Nymburk) and Maurice Ndour (Real Madrid) -- have played in Europe, while Ron Baker, Marshall Plumlee and J. P. Tokoto has yet to play their first ever professional league.
Knicks New System
While it is widely known that Phil Jackson's triangle offense will be the primary system to be adapted by the Knicks, Knicks new head coach Jeff Hornacek will definitely infuse his style of play -- run and gun. Of course there's Kurt Rambis who can help assist in molding these new players to adapt to Jackson's triangle.
Shooting-wise, there will be no problem for Porzingis, as he has already shown the world he can shoot. And he can pass too. Together with Noah, the two will be instrumental for Jackson's success in implementing the triangle offense.
Nevertheless, Hornacek's run and gun can be easily adapted, as it is one of the most common, most effective systems many already know. It's just a matter of who's going to pass to whom, and who's going to run on which side. And knowing how Rose, Anthony and Lee, it could be an easy task for them.
Knicks New Hope
While there are trusted veterans on the team led by Anthony and Rose, the two of them cannot win the games all by themselves. They need the support of one another. That's what the Zen Master had in mind when he got Hernangómez, Kuzminskas and Ndour to sign for the Knicks.
The three may not have the star quality many teams are looking at, but sure they have the qualities of a good team player. Hernangómez offers smart offensive rebounding. Kuzminskas will continue Anthony's dominance in scoring on the No. 3 spot. Ndour's intensity and athleticism down the baseline can make opponents think twice before driving for layup.
Just like inside the kitchen, experimenting on all these spices gives a new recipe. We'll just have to wait if they'll taste good once the new NBA season starts.
