Lakers Rumors: Rudy Gay to Los Angeles?
As the fate of Sacramento Kings small forward Rudy Gay continues to hang in the balance, new teams have emerged as potential landing spots for him in the 2016-17 NBA season in case the two parties decide to part ways.
Adrian Wojnarowksi of Yahoo! Sports' "The Vertical" previously reported that Gay had already informed the Kings' front office about his intent to utilize his 2017 player option, which amounts to $14.3 million and become an unrestricted free agent. This season, he is slated to earn $13.3 million.
Wojnarowski adds that while the Kings have not ruled out the idea of letting of Gay, several teams may continue to show intent in acquiring him, but primarily on a short-term deal. A trade could work into the favor of both the Kings and Gay.
"A trade offers Gay the chance to negotiate a new deal using his Bird rights in 2017. Gay is likely to command a sizable annual raise over the $14.3 million owed to him on his player option," Wojnarowski notes.
With the scenario in play, the Los Angeles Lakers have become one of the likely destinations for the 30-year-old player. According to Christian Rivas for Fansided's Lakeshow Life, one of the deals that could be made would involve Nick Young, who is also been on the trading block for months now.
Rivas also pointed out that the departures of point guards Rajon Rondo, Seth Curry and Marco Belinelli have left a huge gap on the Kings' back court, which would make the entry of Young and possibly Lou Williams an ideal scenario. The Lakers are currently adamant on rebuilding their team after finishing dead last during the recently concluded season with a record of 17-65.
"Any package involving one of the Lakers young guns is laughable. But if the Lakers can get Gay for cheap, things could get very interesting very soon in Los Angeles," an excerpt from Rivas' report reads.
