Is the Los Angeles Lakers Heading Towards Another Losing Season?
What is the purpose of rebuilding the second winningest franchise in the NBA if not to get another championship and tie the Boston Celtics at record 17 titles? This should have been the battle cry of the Los Angeles Lakers front office when they shopped for talents during the NBA Draft and in the free agency. So who they've got?
Four veterans, two of whom many basketball analysts believe were overpriced given their age and their capacity to bring in needed numbers: Luol Deng (31), 4-year $72 million deal, and Timofey Mozgov (30), 4-year $64 million deal. Meanwhile, Yi Jianlian's contract is tagged at $1.14 million, while Metta World Peace signed a one-year, $1.55 million according to Hoops Hype.
Looking into the bright side, the Lakers managed to snatch Brandon Ingram and Ivica Zubac during the NBA Draft. Both showed very promising career ahead of them. However, their skills and capabilities for now are only good coming off the bench.
Lakers Projected Roster
D'Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson are locked in to be the starting backcourt combo for the Lakers with Deng on three, Julius Randle on four and Mozgov at center. Currently, the team has 20 names on the training camp roster and Coach Luke Walton still need to trim the numbers down to 15.
If Walton has to get 3 players in each position, these are the names that might complete the roster:
Point Guard: Russell, Jose Calderon, Marcelo Huertas
Shooting Guard: Clarkson, Lou Williams, Anthony Brown
Small Forward: Deng, Ingram, World Peace
Power Forward: Randle, Larry Nance, Jr. Jianlian
Center: Mozgov, Zubac, Tarik Black
Notice that Nick Young is not on the list. That's because there's a loud buzz during the offseason that the Lakers want to trade him though there seem to be no takers. If not for Metta, Young could have been included in this list. But then this is just a scenario and it's not the final list from the Lakers camp.
Are The Lakers a Playoff Team?
Now here's a question many fans would want to answer - will the Los Angeles Lakers make it to the playoffs? It's actually a very hard pill to swallow but given the talent-laden Western Conference, it will be a miracle if the Lakers come close to being No. 10.
Let's enumerate the Top 9 Western Conference teams based on the greater chance of getting the top to bottom spots:
1.) Golden State Warriors
2.) San Antonio Spurs
3.) Los Angeles Clippers
4.) Portland Trail Blazers
5.) Dallas Mavericks
6.) Memphis Grizzlies
7.) Oklahoma City Thunder
8.) Utah Jazz
9.) Houston Rockets
Below this line, it's a toss for the remaining teams, though the Minnesota Timberwolves seem to have an edge over the teams. Now "Where Would the LA Lakers Land outside the Top 8", this might be the right question to ask.
