Los Angeles Lakers Latest News & Rumors: Jordan Clarkson Early Candidate for Sixth Man of the Year Award
During his first two years in the NBA, Jordan Clarkson has played 117 of 138 games as the starting shooting guard for the Los Angeles Lakers. In fact, Clarkson has played as a starter in all games during his sophomore year.
But under Lakers new head coach Luke Walton, the 6'5" Filipino-American shooting guard is asked to embrace a new role that would greatly help the team, or so the coach believes. So what's this role would be?
Reserve Shooting Guard
"It's really a way of getting a starter in with the second unit so you don't have a lot of drop-offs. But he's very good at that role so far," Walton said about the latest role of his ward as posted on NBA.com. Clarkson is replaced as starting shooting guard by 2015 Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams.
And during the first few of the Lakers' preseason games, Clarkson already averages 13.5 points. That's just 21 minutes of action, which is way below his last season's average of 32.3 minutes per game. This could only mean that should Clarkson stayed longer on the floor, he may easily surpass his last season's average of 15.5 points per game.
Clarkson Improves Outside Shooting
The 24-year old third-year NBA pro is known as a great slasher; however, he needs to improve his outside. And that's what he did during the offseason.
Back in August, a video posted by Pure Sweat trainer / consultant Drew Hanlen on his Twitter account shows not only how Clarkson tries to improve his outside shooting but stretching it out of the comfort zone. As seen on the video, Clarkson is shooting from inside the jump ball area. And he's swishing shots after shots from way downtown.

In a tweet by Ryan Ward of Lakers Nation, he quoted a report from @SpectrumSN about how Clarkson is getting comfortable taking 3-point shots. And if the basis of making those 3-point shots is the shots we saw in the video, coming off the bench, Jordan Clarkson would be one of the top candidates for the 2017 Sixth Man of the Year award.
