Los Angeles Lakers Projected Final 15-Man Roster: Is Nick Young, Metta World Peace Out?
A week from now, NBA preseason will officially end. By Oct. 24, the final list of rosters must be submitted in time before the 2016-17 NBA season starts the following day. The Los Angeles Lakers has already started cutting down to their final 15-man roster. Still, the Lakers are two men over the required number. So who will make the Lakers roster, and who will pack up and leave?
Lakers Cut First Three NBA Hopefuls
Last Wednesday, Lakers waived NBA aspirants Zach Auguste, Julian Jacobs and Travis Wear, bringing the number to 17. Of the three, only Auguste has partial guaranteed contract worth $60,000 as per Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders.
Christian Rivas of Lake Show Life believe Auguste might become part of D-Fenders following his contributions during the last NBA Summer League. However, the future of Jacobs and Wear no longer depends on the Lakers management.
Lakers Starting Five and Supporting Roles
There's one adjustment Lakers coach Luke Walton made on their starting lineup - Jordan Clarkson. As recently reported, Clarkson will assume the role of coming off the bench to ensure the continuity of like having starters during the entire 48 hours.
Taking Clarkson's position will be Lou Williams who will be partnered with sophomore D'Angelo Russell. Marcelo Huertas will be Russell's main backup with Jose Calderon as third option. Rumors say Calderon is most likely to become part of a trade deal that will occur sometime during the middle of the season.
As mentioned earlier, Williams takes over the starting role relegating Clarkson to come off the bench; however, it's believed that the latter will be the one to be tapped during close games.
Randle starts at power forward position with Larry Nance Jr. coming off the bench. Timofey Mozgov is likely to start with Tarik Black as the main backup. Insiders believe that Yi Jianlian and Ivica Zubac are likely to make the cut; however, their roles have yet to be determined. One consideration is to have Jianlian slide down to the power forward post.
Possible Last Cuts to Come from Small Forward Post
The most crowded position on the Lakers roster, Luol Deng takes the lead small forward role with rookie Brandon Ingram as main backup. As some rumors suggest, World Peace is like to be absorbed as part of the coaching staff, leaving Nick Young and Anthony Brown to fight for the last spot.
At 24, Brown is just entering his sophomore year and still has many years ahead. However, during his rookie year, he has constantly assigned to the Los Angeles D-Fenders.
As for Young, he's most likely to make the cut even with the trade rumors during the offseason. If things go as what rumors suggests, Young will become part of the Lakers final roster but will be made a trading chip to get legs for either shooting guard or power forward post.
