NFL Rumors Latest News & Updates: Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers Kiss Super Bowl Hopes Goodbye
Carolina Panthers welcomed the return of Cam Newton, but the return of the star player hardly made a difference. The Panthers bowed to the New Orleans Saints (41-38) technically dashing all hopes of a potential Super Bowl encore this season.
The loss dropped the Panthers to a 1-5 record despite their best efforts. No NFL team has come back from such a record to make it to the Super Bowl and at the rate, their fortunes are going, Carolina is not looking like a team that can defy the odds, ESPN reported.
Blame it on Drew Brees
As mentioned earlier, the Panthers didn’t really play sub-par. It just so happened that the Saints’ Drew Brees starred for the Saints, who used a makeshift secondary, pounding on the errors of the Panthers. The Panthers tried to rough up Brees a bit though the ploy hardly affected the Saints quarterback.
The Panthers failed to capitalize on the poor defense of the Saints. They did manage to pull abreast (31-30) though the boys of Sean Payton found ways to offset the tactics of Panthers’ coach Ron Rivera.
Did Panthers Abandon NFL season success?
With this season seen to be over for the Carolina Panthers, one notable change was their defense. It was nowhere near their 2015-16 NFL season success and critics believe that this was what did them in, Fox Sports reported.
Josh Norman walked, leaving a big void at the cornerback position. All of that was on display in the Panthers last meeting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team which they could have defeated with Derek Anderson filling in for an injured Newton.
With their defensive line failing to live up to expectations, that loss to the Buccaneers cast questions on what has happened to the surprise team that made it all the way to Super Bowl 50.
