Leonardo DiCaprio Teams Up with Scream Queens star Glen Powell for New Movie
The 1990s cartoon Captain Planet will soon be seen in the big screen. Oscar-winning actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio is going to lead the project.
The Wolf Of Wall Street and The Revenant star is currently promoting his new film Before The Flood - which sees him traveling the globe to explore and reveal the true impact of global warming.
However, DiCaprio won't star in this one; he'll be producing it, instead.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that if Paramount can snag the Captain Planet rights, DiCaprio's production company, Appian Way, is looking to hire Glen Powell and his writing partner, Jono Matt to pen the screenplay.
The report further revealed that the project was previously in development at Sony but the rights lapsed. One thing captivating to Paramount and Appian Way was the revolutionary take by Matt and Powell on the material:
Sources indicate the story takes place years after the adventures of the show, with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him.
Captain Planet was created by billionaire Ted Turner to spread awareness of the environmental damage done to earth every year. It was aired from September 1990 to December 1992.
"Our world is in peril," goes the narration at the start of every Captain Planet episode. "Gaia, the spirit of the Earth, can no longer stand the terrible destruction plaguing our planet. She gives five magic rings to five special young people. From Africa, Kwame with the power of earth; from the North America, Wheeler with the power of fire; from the Soviet Union, Linka with the power of wind; from Asia, Gi with the power of water; and from South America, Ma-Ti with the power of heart. With the five powers combined they summon earth's greatest champion: Captain Planet!"
The project and its environmental themes are a natural fit for DiCaprio, a well-known environmentalist who often speaks out on various environmental issues.
