OKC Thunder Trade Rumors: Blake Griffin to Join Russell Westbrook Before Trade Deadline Expires?
Kevin Durant may be gone but he's not irreplaceable. While Russell Westbrook may be able to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Western Conference or even the NBA Finals, rumor has it that the Thunder front office wants to ensure their revenge should they face the Golden State Warriors and is now scrambling to get one man who can help the Westbrook: Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers.
LA Clippers Looking for Trade Partner for Blake Griffin?
Steven Loung of SportsNet.ca predicted that the Los Angeles Clippers front office is thinking of moving at least one of their two superstars on the trading table, Griffin and Chris Paul. Between the two superstars, Loung believe that should the Clippers decides to offer one of their two superstars, Griffin is the odd-man out even if he's four years younger than Paul.
Of course, both players offer the biggest interest any team would place a bet on. Both players are big-time scores, both have high basketball IQ; however, as earlier mentioned, Griffin is younger making his market value higher. And they cannot afford to lose Paul since he's one of the best point guards in the league and no one in the Clippers bench comes near his ability.
Next season, Griffin can opt out of his contract, making him the third most sought-after free agent in the market for 2017. That leaves the Clippers nothing but a big, empty shoe to fill in. Clippers cannot afford to lose Griffin since they don't have any draft picks until 2020 (second round draft pick from Cleveland) thus a trade would be more viable.
Griffin to OKC
But how can OKC get Griffin when they don't have enough players, even draft picks, to secure the trade? Besides, getting Griffin would definitely push OKC above the salary cap imposed by the league [source: Hoops Hype].
These are just two of the bigger concerns by the OKC executives. Nonetheless, if OKC badly wants to punish Durant for leaving them, anything is possible. What's more important is that Griffin might be available before the trade deadline ends and OKC should grab this one time opportunity before it's too late.
Here's a trade scenario which OKC might end up with to get the 6'10" high-flying power forward - having Steven Adams included on the trade deal. Of course, that's a big gamble considering that Adams is the starting center for OKC. But this is also the biggest advantage the Clippers would want to take. And this could lead to a win-win situation for both teams. Plus, it will be a homecoming for Blake Griffin.
