‘Emerald City’: Sinister Yet Sexier Wizard of Oz: Dorothy’s Definitely Not In Kansas Anymore!
NBC's upcoming "Emerald City" recreates L. Frank Baum's "Land of Oz" on a very different level. The series portrays an adult version of Dorothy Gales in a journey to discover redemption and direction, where witches rule the Kingdom of Oz, with Toto (now a bulky K9 police dog) and a hunky Scarecrow as partners.
In a newly released trailer for Emerald City, viewers can see the picture of a darker and more action-packed adventure for Dorothy ("True Detective" actress Adria Arjona), definitely not the 'Wizard of Oz' we originally branded, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Here is what we know of the series based on the newly released official video clip:
Dorothy is a young Kansas woman who is trying to get herself together, with a K9 dog, is transported through a tornado portal to the mystical land of competing realms, lethal warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy. She accidentally hit and "killed" the Wicked Witch of the East (played by Florence Kasumba) with a police car.
Puzzled Dorothy tries to find her way back to Kansas and was told by a tribe chief to follow the yellow brick road heading to Oz. Along the way she helped a helpless crucified man covered in hay, the new version of the Scarecrow of the show, played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen, whom will become Dorothy's "home" in a place where she doesn't belong.
In Oz, where there is no more magic, the Wizard (Vincent D'Onofrio) is searching for Dorothy for she holds the fate of the kingdom in her hands. The rulers of Oz believe that Dorothy is not the ordinary person she thinks she is and she was brought to Oz purposely.
In a land at war to obtain supremacy Dorothy will uncover her destiny and discover her power as she fights with the good forces, especially the Good Witch Glinda (Joely Richardson), to conquer darkness and wickedness.
The Emerald City TV series is created by Matthew Arnold for Universal Television Production and directed by Tarsem Singh (all 10 episodes of the first season). The show will have a two-hour special event premiere on Friday, Jan. 6 at 9 p.m.
