Based on ESPN, Segura will likely play as starting shortstop and leadoff hitter for the Mariners. The arrival of Segura will solidify the team's infield that includes Robinson Cano at second base and Kyle Seager at the third base.
During the 2016 season, Segura hit .319/.368/.499 with 20 home runs, 41 doubles, 33 steals and 102 runs scored when he played for the Diamondbacks. He also recorded a league-leading 203 hits in the National League and posted a career-high 5.7 WAR according to SB Nation.
Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto believes Segura was one of the premier offensive players in the majors last season and his combination of average, speed and power were difficult to find at a position like a shortstop and at top of their lineup.
Dipoto also said, "We believe pairing him with Robinson Cano gives us tremendous offensive potential in the middle of our infield. This trade made more sense for where our roster is, and Jean Segura fit this club about as well as any player we were looking at ". The Mariners also get pitcher Zac Curtis and outfielder Mitch Haniger.
Curtis made his major league debut last season pitching for 21 games and posting a 6.75 ERA with more walks (13) than strikeouts (10) for the Diamondbacks. He had a 1.95 ERA with 35 walks in 111 innings and 169 strikeouts in the minor league for the three seasons.
Haniger also made his major league debut last season hitting .229/.309/.404 in 34 games for Arizona. He had a great year in the minor league hitting .321/.419/.581 with 25 home runs and 34 doubles in 129 games between Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno.
On the other hand, the addition of Taijuan Walker to the Diamondbacks will help the team's pitching staff that posted a 5.09 ERA last season which was the worst in the major league. Walker will join ace Zack Greinke, Patrick Corbin, Shelby Miller and Archie Bradley on Dbacks rotation.
New Arizona Dbacks GM Mike Hazen commented on acquiring Walker and he said, "Young, controllable pitching is hard to find, and adding Taijuan to the rotation gives us significant depth in that area. "
Hazen added, "In Ketel, we believe we have acquired a talented, switch-hitting shortstop to join a very solid core of young middle infielders."
Shortstop Ketel Marte hit .259/.287/.323 in 119 games for the Mariners last season. He had hit .267/.309/.349 with 35 doubles and 19 stolen bases in 176 games during two major league seasons.
