'Doctor Strange Levitates Above Iron Man, Marvel’s Biggest Single Character Intro Film Worldwide!
Disney/Marvel's "Doctor Strange" reached a major breakthrough, setting a new global benchmark for a single-character introduction film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beating Iron Man's box office and other Marvel superheroes.
Seems like magic has finally defeated technology (pun intended)! With $616 million worldwide earning, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is now ahead of Iron Man's lifetime record of $585 million, making it now Marvel Cinematic Universe's biggest single-character introduction movie, Deadline reported.
The Scott Derrickson-directed picture is now among the year's top 10 highest-grossing films in North America, internationally, and worldwide. The film is also the ninth title in the MCU to surpass the $600M milestone, and the fifth film of the year for Disney.
Compared to other Marvel superheroes, "Doctor Strange" has now exceeded the worldwide lifetime comes off "The Incredible Hulk" ($263M), "Captain America: The First Avenger" ($371M), "Thor" ($449M), 'Ant-Man' ($520M) and 'Iron Man' ($585M).
As of Sunday, Sorcerer Supreme has a $205.1 million domestic cumulative audience. Again soaring above the lifetimes of "The Incredible Hulk" ($135M), "Cap America: The First Avenger" ($177M), "Ant-Man" ($180M) and "Thor" ($181M), the surgeon is also about to pass "Thor: The Dark World" ($206.4M).
For its international box office, Doctor Strange has accumulated a total of $410.9 million cumes. Garnering bigger audience compared to 'The Incredible Hulk' ($129M), 'Cap 1' ($194M), 'Iron Man' ($266M), 'Thor' ($268M), 'Iron Man 2' ($310M) and 'Ant-Man' ($339M). The movie has bested the lifetime record of 2016's "X-Men: Apocalypse" at all three levels ($155M/$388M/$544M).
"Doctor Strange" has found huge success in China, serving as the number one overseas market for the film, earning $109.6 million in the region. The relevant increase in income is still expected as the movie is still yet to be released in Japan on January 27.
Following the incredible milestone of the movie, and though it is too early for MCU to have an official announcement about a sequel, director Scott Derrickson expressed his interest in directing Doctor Strange 2. He said the movie was the best filmmaking experience of his career.
But before the sequel, Strange will first appear in 'Thor: Ragnarok', who will hit theaters on Nov. 3, 2017, and 'Avengers: Infinity War', which opens on May 4, 2018.
