Following the hype of the augmented reality game, "Pokémon Go," the first live-action film franchise based on the Japanese pocket monster game, "Detective Pikachu" was confirmed just recently. Legendary Entertainment and the Pokémon Company teamed up to close the deal.

Rob Letterman has recently been set by Legendary to helm the "Detective Pikachu" live-action movie; his credits include "Goosebumps" and "Monsters vs. Aliens," which he directed, and "Shark Tale," which he wrote and directed, according to a report by Deadline.

The "Detective Pikachu" live-action film is being written by Nicole Perlman, a Marvel veteran on films like "Guardians of the Galaxy" and the upcoming "Captain Marvel," and Alex Hirsch (Disney XD's Gravity Falls).

Legendary acquired the film rights in July at the height of the "Pokémon Go" craze and quickly went into development on a new movie while the reality game was at peak insanity.

Universal Pictures, Legendary's distribution partner, will release the live-action film outside Japan while the Pokémon Company's longtime movie collaborator, Toho, will handle distribution of the film franchise in Japan, the same partnership with Legendary on its iconic monster reboot for Godzilla.

The feature franchise will be centered on Detective Pikachu, a character in the Pokémon universe that was introduced through a video game in Japan. The movie will cover a different aspect of the Pokémon universe.

This is not the average Pikachu, as the character is seen to be donning a Sherlock Holmes cap and magnifying glass to solve mysteries and drink his favorite drink, an espresso.

Pokémon, first created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995, is a franchise of video games, trading cards, TV shows, comic books and movies that center on the unique creatures that are collected by Pokemon Trainers, who then train them to battle for sport.

The first video game launched for Game Boy, was released in 1996. The first film, "Pokemon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back," was released in 1998 and there have been 19 films released to date based on the property.
