New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will go through a back surgery on Friday after he was diagnosed with a herniated disk in his back.

According to a statement released on Patriots website, Gronk experienced a significant back and leg pain after he takes an early hit during their game against the Jets. The injury forced Rob Gronkowski to leave and not return in the game.

"With the help of the Patriots medical staff, along with the consultation of several medical experts, it has been determined that it is in Rob's best long-term interest to undergo surgery to address his lower back injury," the Patriots stated.

The Patriots did not expect that Gronkowski will be able to return and play the remainder of this season. They will have to wait for the results of Gronkowski's surgery on Friday before making the final judgment on whether he will continue or will not play this season.

The Patriots expressed how Gronk was important for the team as they mentioned on the statement, "Rob has always been one of our hardest workers and was voted captain for the leadership he provides on our team. We are deeply saddened any time a player is lost to injury."

They continued, "We are committed to assisting Rob throughout his recovery and look forward to his return to playing football for the New England Patriots."

NFL reported that the loss of Gronk was a severe blow for Tom Brady because Gronk was Brady's favorite target on passing plays. Brady said on Westwood One Radio Network that it does not help losing great players.

Brady continued, "To not have Gronk out there as one of our best players and most dependable, consistent players ... makes things challenging for us, but that's what the NFL season is about. It's about overcoming challenges, adversities."

Gronkowski's surgery on Friday will be his third time in back injury issues. Gronk underwent surgery when he still playing in University of Arizona in 2009 and during his fourth season with the Patriots in 2013.

Gronkowski played eight games and scored three touchdowns with 25 receptions for 540 yards this season. The Patriots have a 9-2 record and they will play without Gronk on Sunday (Dec.4) versus the Los Angeles Rams .
