WWE 2016 Latest News & Update: AJ Styles Injury Handing James Elsworth Heavyweight Title?
WWE SmackDown heavyweight champion AJ Styles missed the weekend house shows tied up to a reported ankle injury. It seems that the “Phenomenal One” suffered the injury at WWE TLC and a reason why he was seen last week with the aid of walking boots.
The extent of AJ Styles’ injury is unknown for now though he is scheduled to appear at WWE SmackDown this Tuesday (Dec. 13). He is set to defend his title against James Elsworth with the odds seemingly in the favor of the 31-year-old wrestler, the Wrestling Observer reported.
Under normal circumstances, that could be a big boost for Elsworth. But the problem is that the “Chin-less” one made things complicated when he turned on Dean Ambrose. Worse, he even got involved last week. He cost the “Lunatic Fringe” a chance to win the Intercontinental title from “The Miz."
Thus, Elsworth’s decision to turn on his friend may have come at a bad time. But then again, Ambrose could help Elsworth one more time before eventually challenging for the heavyweight title he has been pursuing for quite some time now.
The thing here is that AJ Styles is more than likely appear but expected to come out of the show still the WWE SmackDown heavyweight champion. Ambrose will get involved but likely cost Elsworth the win.
That said, it accounts for the perfect opportunity for Styles to get some time off. The storyline would shift to Ambrose and Elsworth as the two former friends sort out their differences. It could even reach the point that they slug it out to become the no. 1 contender to Styles’ title.
An ankle injury is unlikely to keep Styles from competing and against Elsworth at that. Also, the SmackDown scenario would seem a bit off should the “Chin-less” one end up becoming the heavyweight champion, Cageside Seats reported.
