Manny Pacquiao News: Bob Arum Uncertain About Pacquiao's Future After 2017
Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao may choose to fight on, but his promoter Bob Arum is uncertain about his future.
"Pacman" made his return to boxing after a seven-month retirement last November 5th, when he fought then WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas. Pacquiao looked sensational during the fight, and ended up winning via a convincing unanimous decision verdict, reclaiming the 147-pound world title strap in the process.
After his win, several names have been presented as possible opponents for the first and only eight-division world champion. Among them are that of fellow welterweight champion Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman, WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford, and a possible rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Back in his home country of the Philippines, Pacquiao is also an elected Senator who is serving his first of a three-year term. In a recent interview with Boxingscene.com, Top Rank chief Bob Arum stated that he is looking at the end of June for Pacquiao's next fight date. The 84-year-old veteran promoter added that he will still need to personally sit down with Pacquiao and the Philippines' senate president to discuss the perfect timetable for the fight.
As far as his next opponent goes, Arum says it is still all up in the air. But at the end of it all, he is counting on Pacquiao himself to make the final decision.
"Manny will tell me and we have a number of opponents we're considering, a number of ways to go, a number of venues we're talking to about and nothing is going to be finalized till I go to the Philippines and do my due diligence," Arum said.
At 38-years of age, it does not look like Pacquiao will be slowing down any time soon. After all, he had admitted upon his return that boxing is "his passion" ,noting how he wants it to be his prime source of income. But as far as Arum is concerned, Pacquiao's future after 2017 remains uncertain.
"I think he'll fight at least twice more next year. After next year, I have absolutely no idea."
