NFL Update: The Redskins Are Who We Thought They Were
Despite an up and down season with mixed results, the Redskins controlled their own destiny in the final week of the NFL season, playing at home, against their division rivals, who had already clinched a playoff birth and had nothing to play for. Aaaaand, they're gone.
The Redskins couldn't handle the pressure and choked away their playoff hopes, losing to the New York Giants 19-10, and finishing the season with a disappointing 8-7-1 record.
The difference between a good team and an average team is how they handle pressure situations, and the Redskins showed that despite all the talent they have on their roster, they are not a playoff caliber team
They blew their first matchup against the Cowboys at home. Then they blew their lead in the fourth quarter in Detroit, allowing the Lions to steal the game on the final drive. Then they botched a win against Cincinnati in London, and lost key games late in the season to Arizona, Carolina(at home on national television), and now against the Giants(again at home).
Somehow, the Redskins still had a chance at the post-season handed to them on a silver platter, and they still couldn't take advantage of a golden situation. They will now break out the golf clubs and spend the offseason wondering how they let it all slip away.
The Redskins looked timid and flat for most of Sunday's game, yet still could have sent it to overtime before they literally threw it away.
Late in the fourth quarter, Washington was trailing 13-10 and on the verge of sending the game into overtime, when Cousins threw a horrible interception over the middle to Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie with 1:12 remaining. That was the nail in the coffin for the Redskins season.
Cousins, who will be a free agent, had a glorious chance to solidify his status as an elite NFL quarterback, and bring some serious leverage to the negotiating table. He had great numbers this season, but will that be enough to land a mega deal in Washington, or elsewhere?
The Redskins have some serious thinking to do in the off-season, and will have time to ponder how they underperformed with so much on the line.
