Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin: Boxing Expert Predicts Victory for Saul Alvarez
Boxing fans are still hoping that the Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin showdown will eventually happen later this year after the upcoming fights of both superstars. And if it happens, one boxing experts thinks that Alvarez has the edge.
Popular boxing commentator Bob Sheridan said that if he will be forced to do so, he will put his money on the line for Alvarez. Sheridan pointed out that Alvarez is actually the bigger fighter, contrary to what most fans are seeing.
"I'd be slightly favoring Canelo Alvarez," Sheridan said in an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio. "I think he's a little bit bigger. It's a strong thing to say against Golovkin, but right now until I see how everything comes together, I'd be slightly favoring Canelo Alvarez."
Alvarez, who has a 48-1-1 record with 24 knockouts, has been fighting at 154 pounds recently. Golovkin, on the other hand, has been dominating in the 160-pound division. But despite the disparity, Sheridan is still convinced that Canelo has the size advantage over Golovkin.
Sheridan also added that he believes the highly anticipated showdown will eventually happen. He does not think Canelo is really afraid of Golovkin.
The Hall of Famer insisted that if given the opportunity to decide for himself, Alvarez will surely agree to face GGG. However, Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya knows that the longer the wait, the bigger the money they could get because fans will be more eager to watch the bout.
Golovkin, who is undefeated in 36 fights with 33 knockout victories under his belt, already has a scheduled fight this year. The 34-year-old Kazakh will face Daniel Jacobs on March 18 at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
On the other hand, Alvarez is reportedly in talks for a potential fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. If the negotiation comes to fruition, the Alvarez-Chavez match will likely take place on Cinco de Mayo weekend on May 6.
The Alvarez vs Chavez all-Mexican showdown will likely generate huge pay-per-view buys but not all fans and boxers are thrilled. Former world champion Paulie Malignaggi said that the fight will be a waste of time but also agreed that it could be a huge hit.
"That's a waste-of-time-fight, but it will probably get a ton of buys," Malignaggi told Bloody Elbow. "I think the ignorant opinions are what make the fight game so interesting - you'll generate buys, you'll generate hype, you'll generate an incredible difference of opinion in debates."
