Ronda Rousey Update: Ex-UFC Champ Jon Jones Defends Rousey From Detractors
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was yet another sports superstar who came to the defense of Ronda Rousey after her loss to Amana Nunes at UFC 207.
Rousey's return fight after a year-long layoff ended on a sour note, when she was stopped by current champion Amanda Nunes in just 48 seconds of the first round. The loss marks the second consecutive defeat in her short, yet already storied career, with the first one at the hands of former champion Holly Holm at UFC 193 last November 2015 in Melbourne.
Rousey herself declared in her most recent appearance on the Ellen Show that her fight against Nunes may be "one of her last ones." With the loss to Nunes, many people are now inclined to believe that she may indeed be on her way towards retirement.
However, there are also those who are rooting for her to fight on, one of them being Jon Jones. In a series of tweets he posted after the fight (via Yahoo! Sports), "Bones'" unsolicited advice to Rousey was to "pick herself up and try again."
"I think it's important for Ronda to show her fans how great she truly is by displaying her courage and giving it another try," Jones wrote. "I also still believe she beats 90% of the division Lots of ass kicking still to be done, lots of money to be made."
For her part, Rousey says she would still need some "time to reflect", to determine what her next move would be. And for Jones, whatever she chooses to do next would be heavily relevant on her overall legacy.
"I really hope she chooses to be unbroken. Her story doesn't have to be over here," Jones posted.
Jones is not the only big-named sports figure to show support for Rousey. Recently, NBA stars LeBron James and Kobe Bryant also sent their messages of encouragement to the former UFC women's bantamweight champion.
