Clemson Exact Revenge on Alabama In Dramatic Fashion, 35-31
It was sweet revenge for the Clemson Tigers after defeating the defending champion Alabama Crimson Tide for the College Football Playoff National Championship, 35-31 in what was dubbed as the rematch of the two Southern football powerhouses. And why not, the Tigers were the victims against the Tide in last year's national championship edition.
But it was more than just revenge, it was one of the most dramatic victories in the history of college football, with a last second touchdown for the Tigers on the final play. This is the second national title for the Clemson Tigers, who won the crown back in 1981.
Last Second Touchdown
"I told them tonight that the difference in this game would be the love they have for each other," Alabama Crimson Tide alumni and currently Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney said as posted on The New York Times. "I knew they wouldn't quit." And his boys didn't quit.
With a final play and just a few seconds left to complete what became the final play of the season, junior QB Deshaun Watson found Hunter Renfrow, who was able to sneak past his defender and get wide open in the end zone. That sent the more than 74,000+ crowd wild, in an ending for the ages for the players and Cemson faithful.
"The thing that was running through my mind was Vince Young," Watson said describing the feeling during that fateful moment as posted on AL.com. "I want to be legendary...Vince Young was one of my greatest players that I loved to watch, and we pulled it off."
The Final Play Breakdown - 'Disruption' Not 'Illegal Pick'
While many are left in shock, some are asking if the Tigers ran an illegal play, an 'illegal pick' that is. But Clemson's co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott said that 'disruption' is fully within the rules of football.
"Obviously we know we can't set a pick," Elliott said. Explaining how the play went on, Elliot revealed what truly happened, "We are just trying to create some disruption. What happened there if you watch it, I don't know if there was a pick set between our guy and their guy, but their guy ultimately had to run over the top and that allowed enough room for Deshaun to find Renfrow for the touchdown."
