Why Colin Kaepernick Is Still Available on the Market Days After NFL Free Agency Started
Teams and players are getting busy with the NFL free agency under way but one prominent name is not making significant noise over the past several days. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who finally left the San Francisco 49ers earlier this month, is slowly becoming an afterthought.
NFL fans were expecting Kaepernick to make a buzz heading into the 2017 season. He made headlines when he opted out of his contract with the 49ers, who are looking to make changes at quarterback under new general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan.
However, following the move, the rumors and speculations involving Kaepernick died down. The last team linked to him were the Seattle Seahawks. A number of NFL reporters saw this as a possibility, but so far, no deal is being accomplished and it is unknown if the Seahawks are truly interested in acquiring the former 49ers franchise star.
According to NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk, teams might not be interested in making a gamble at this point of the offseason. The main reason is not the stand he had regarding the national anthem. Teams reportedly have doubts on the veteran quarterback because of his declining on-field performance in the past three seasons.
After Kaepernick led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2012 season and to the NFC Championship Game during the 2013 season, his performance went on a downward trajectory. The last two seasons were the worst, as he was forced to let go of the starting job only to get it back in the 2016 NFL season.
Kaepernick must not lose hope with still months away from the 2017 season. There are teams who badly need a quarterback and these are the ones likely to grant him a contract. The Denver Broncos, New York Jets, and the Houston Texans are all looking to sign a quarterback.
It is just tougher to land a team now since there are more efficient quarterbacks on the market. Kaepernick is competing with the likes of Tony Romo and Jimmy Garoppolo, who are among the hottest quarterbacks believed to be available this offseason.
