Dallas Cowboys Could Lose Brandon Carr to New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals
Recent rumors are out that the Dallas Cowboys could lose veteran cornerback Brandon Carr in this year's free agency. The New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals are reportedly interested in signing the nine-year pro.
Carr, who will turn 31 this May, became a free agent this offseason after his five-year, $50.1 million deal with the Cowboys expired at the end of the 2016 season. He has 552 tackles in his so far nine-year career, four with the Kansas City Chiefs and five with the Cowboys, and also has 110 pass deflections, 15 interceptions and two touchdowns.
NJ Advance Media reported that the former Grand Valley State standout is on the Jets' radar, as general manager Mike Maccagnan is targeting an experienced cornerback at the moment. The report noted that a "visit hasn't been scheduled yet, but they like him."
Carr is arguably the best cornerback available in the current free-agent market. With a 6-foot, 210-pound stature, he is big at his position, fast and is a reliable man-coverage defender.
The Jets are said to be badly in need of a cornerback, as the team has been struggling on the defensive end since last season. Last year, New York permitted 52 passing plays that had gained more than 20 yards each, which is the 14th highest in the league.
They also allowed their opponents a gain of 40-plus yards 13 times in 2016, third-most in the NFL. Their opponents have also scored 30 touchdowns against them (6th-most), while they only intercepted eight of their opponents' passes (second lowest).
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are also targeting Carr after having a "mass exodus of defensive players this offseason," as per USA Today's Cards Wire. Four starters of Arizona's defensive team have already signed with other teams at the moment, while a fifth is expected to also follow his former teammates.
Specifically, the exit of Marcus Cooper has left a significant void in the cornerback spot and Carr is said to be the apple of Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians' eye. Aside from Carr, Arizona is also looking at free agents Morris Claiborne, Davon House and Jerraud Powers.
