Recent rumors have emerged that Nick Mangold could join his former team's cross-city rivals, the New York Giants, after the New York Jets let him go in free agency this offseason. The 33-year-old center has only played with the Jets in his professional career before the team decided to release him last month.

The Giants are not new into acquiring former Jets players as they did so to quarterback Geno Smith, wide receiver Brandon Marshall, and defensive tackle Damon Harrison in the past. While the "pattern itself does not appear to be intentional," as per USA Today, there is certainly an emerging theme between the two New York franchises.

The report cited ESPN's The Dan Graca & Willie Colon Show where Colon revealed that there are speculations about the Giants' interest in the veteran Ohio State product. "There are rumbles of Nick Mangold right now. Rumbles," said Colon. "He's probably the smarted guy I've ever played with. Him going to be a Giant would be tough. That's something I don't think Jets fans could swallow. We'll see."

At the moment, the Giants have 25-year-old Weston Richburg at starting center, who the report identified as "one of the best centers in the game" right now. At 6-foot-3 and 298 pounds, Richburg is virtually almost the same size as Mangold's 6-foot-4, 307-pound frame. However, there is a difference between the two when it comes to experience and skillset.

There are speculations that if the Giants ultimately decide to acquire Mangold, the veteran will most likely switch to the offensive line's guard position. Giants head coach Ben McAdoo reportedly wants Richburg to remain at center.

However, other rumors are out that a Mangold-to-Giants deal is a long shot, as McAdoo is currently in need of more tackles than guards and Mangold is exclusively an interior player. The recent acquisition of DJ Fluker, who can play at both tackle and guard, and re-signing of John Jerry filled up all of the guard requirements of the Giants, leaving no room for Mangold.
