Tom Brady's Missing Super Bowl Jersey Recovered From Member of International Media in Mexico
The NFL announced that it has found the jersey worn by New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in their Super Bowl LI victory. The jersey was recovered from an accredited member of the international media in Mexico.
The NFL said the jersey was recovered during a joint operation between the league, the New England Patriots' security team and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, NFL.com reported. During the operation, the league also recovered a Tom Brady jersey worn in New England's Super Bowl XLIX win over the Seattle Seahawks.
The jersey was recovered from the possession of Mauricio Ortega, a former executive with Mexican newspaper company Diario La Prensa. Ortega reportedly resigned on Tuesday due to health reasons.
"Through the cooperation of the NFL and New England Patriots' security teams, the FBI and other law enforcement authorities, the Super Bowl LI jersey worn last month by MVP Tom Brady has been recovered," the NFL said in a statement. "Also retrieved during the ongoing investigation was the jersey Brady wore in the Patriots' victory in Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks in 2015".
Brady's jersey had been missing for more than six weeks. It has an assessed value of $500,000 by the Houston police, but a Lelands auction house representative said it could be worth as much as $1 million.
In addition, the NFL also found a Denver Broncos helmet during the operation. According to reports, the helmet was worn by Von Miller during the Broncos' Super Bowl 50 win, where he was picked as Most Valuable Player.
The 39-year-old Brady wore the jersey as he led the Patriots to an improbable comeback from a 25-point deficit over the Atlanta Falcons at Super Bowl LI last Feb. 5. His 43-of-62, 466-yard, two-touchdown performance helped the Patriots overcome a 28-3 deficit en route to a 34-28 overtime win.
Brady announced during his MVP news conference the following day that his jersey was missing. Tthe NFL and the Houston Police immediately launched a massive search for the jersey.
