NBA Trade Rumors: Los Angeles Clippers Almost Had Carmelo Anthony Before the Deadline
The Los Angeles Clippers may have been very close to acquiring Carmelo Anthony from the New York Knicks before the annual NBA trade deadline last month. Before the teams met Monday, Anthony spoke about the possibility of him leaving New York before the deadline and heading to Los Angeles.
"I haven't thought about it. There was an opportunity during the deadline. There was always talk the last couple of seasons being connected to Clippers or Lakers. Somehow always been connected. First it was the Lakers. Now it's the Clippers situation," Anthony replied according to the New York Post when asked about playing in Los Angeles.
Anthony added that this is something he tries not to think about because he remains a Knickerbocker and he is facing these teams. The 32-year-old might want to change his mindset regarding the issue with the 2016-17 NBA regular season nearing its end.
Many expect that Knicks president Phil Jackson will talk to Anthony about being traded in the offseason. The All-Star forward was linked to numerous teams in the past, but the no-trade clause in his contract is making it difficult for the Knicks to find a trade partner.
It was not long ago when Anthony stood firm with his desire to stay in New York despite the team's failure to reach the playoffs. During that time, it seemed like he was set to end his career with the Knicks. It is a little different now, with the former Syracuse standout being more open about this matter.
The Knicks only have 12 games left in their regular-season schedule. These might also be the last games Anthony wears the blue and orange of New York. This season is another failure for the Knicks, who are 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 27-43 record.
