While many expect them to trade backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, some believe that the New England Patriots should keep him as eventual successor to Tom Brady. Brady will be 40 years old when the 2017 season begins. Age and injuries may affect his performance down the road.

Bob Harkins of FanRag Sports said Garoppolo is the best insurance that the Patriots have in their arsenal in case Brady's age take its toll on him or if he goes down with an injury. Garoppolo has been Brady's backup for three years so he is aware of the system of head coach Bill Belichick.

Garoppolo's performance in limited action shows that he has the skill set ideal for Belichick's system, especially in terms of quick and accurate delivery of the ball. He also has the ability to read defenses, make quick decisions, and deliver passes in rhythm.

Last season, Garoppolo completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 502 yards and four touchdowns with no interception.  In addition, he took just three sacks and put up a passer rating of 113.3.

Several teams have expressed interest in Garoppolo, but the Cleveland Browns are the most aggressive in pursuing the backup quarterback. The Browns are expected to ramp up their quest to acquire Garoppolo in the NFL owners meetings beginning Sunday in Phoenix, ESPN reported.

The Browns can offer their No. 12 pick to the New England for Garoppolo. However, it is seen as a steep price to pay for a quarterback who played just six games last season, with two starts.

The 25-year-old Garoppolo has one year left in his contract with the Patriots so they do not have to worry about cap space. The Patriots also have an option to use the franchise tag on Garoppolo next season.

"For the most part I'm just trying to stay level-headed, try not to overthink it too much," said Garoppolo when asked about trade rumors involving his name. "Because at the end of the day I'm still under contract. It's not my decision if I get traded or if I don't."
