NHL Playoffs 2017 Predictions: Washington Capitals Tipped to Win the Stanley Cup This Season

By Teddy Cecilio, Posted: 03/22/17 04:32PM EDT

The Washington Capitals are heavily favored to win the Stanley Cup despite a late slump that saw them won just four of their past 10 games. The Capitals are tied with the Columbus Blue Jackets as the top team in the East and overall standings with 100 points in 71 games.

According to OddsShark.com, the Capitals have a 9/2 odds of winning the Stanley Cup, behind their high-scoring line-up led by mainstays Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. The Capitals are third in goals per game (3.20) and have the eighth-best power-play percentage (21.1), as reported by Bleacher Report.

The Capitals are also known for their defense, with All-Star netminder Braden Holtby giving up just 2.17 goals per game. They also surrendered the fourth-fewest shots per game (27.7) and have the seventh-best penalty-killing percentage (83.7).

Despite having a powerhouse roster, the Capitals have failed to advance beyond the second round in postseason play. As consolation, the Capitals captured two Presidents' Trophy in 2010 and 2016 as the team with the most points in the regular season but now, they hope to go all the way this season.

The Capitals and the Blue Jackets are already assured of playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. The Chicago Blackhawks are the only Western Conference squad in the playoffs with 99 points.

The Blackhawks carry a 5/1 odds while the Minnesota Wild are 6/1 favorites to win it all. The Pittsburgh Penguins have a 10/1 odds and the Sharks and Canadiens have 12/1 odds.

The New York Rangers and the Blue Jackets are both pegged as 14/1 favorites. The Rangers are assured of the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with 93 points while the Toronto Maple Leafs occupy the second slot with 81 points.

The Edmonton Oilers are 20/1 favorites while the Anaheim Ducks follow suit at 22/1/ The Boston Bruins carry a 25/1 odds while the Nashville Predators and the Los Angeles Kings are pegged as 28/1 favorites.
