Soccer Transfer Rumors: Manchester City's Yaya Toure Could Join 'Bitter Rivals' Manchester United This Summer
Veteran midfielder Yaya Toure is linked to a highly-controversial summer move from Manchester City to Manchester United. Toure's future with City has become uncertain as head coach Pep Guardiola is rumored to be keen on selling the Ivory Coast international at season's end.
Toure, who will turn 34 this May, now has his odds of moving to his current team's cross-city rivals shorten to 13/8, according to The Sun. The report cited Ladbrokes News' Dave Burin, as the source as Toure is expected to soon "link up" with his former Barcelona teammate, United's 35-year-old striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Aside from a Red Devils switch, a move to the Chinese Super League is predicted as well as a transfer to four other Premier League squads, namely Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham. A return to Barcelona was ruled out by the bookies.
Toure's agent, Dimitri Seluk, recently said that his client "would relish the opportunity of playing under (United coach) Jose Mourinho." He called the Portuguese mentor a "very good coach" and even mentioned Toure's previous experience as Ibrahimovic's teammate.
Seluk then said that joining United would not be an issue for him and Toure, but it will be a problem for City and its fans. "I understand this is two clubs who are rivals but for me, for example, this is not a problem for Yaya or for me, this problem will be for Manchester City staff," he said.
Last year, Toure disclosed that he initially thought he was joining United rather than City when he left Barcelona in 2010. However, he was still content about ending up with the Etihad giants instead.
"When I was at Barcelona and initially approached by Manchester City I thought it was Manchester United that wanted me," Toure said. "My agent had to tell me it was the team in the blue shirts."
"At the time Manchester United were putting Manchester City in the shadows. It was unbelievable. Manchester United is a big club and I respect that club a lot," he added.
