Soccer Rumors: Diego Costa Confesses He Requested Chelsea Exit for Atletico Madrid
Chelsea forward Diego Costa recently admitted that he tried to force an exit out of the Stamford Bridge last summer to go back to his former club Atletico Madrid. However, negotiations between the two clubs failed and he was obliged to "build bridges" with new head coach Antonio Conte as a result.
SkySports reported that Costa was "heavily linked with a move back to his former club last summer" after a disappointing 2015-2016 season when the Blues were not able to defend their Premier League title. Chelsea finished 10th in the standings at that time as the team failed to qualify for the continental competitions.
The 28-year-old striker confessed that he tried to return to Atletico after the team's frustrating finish, but the La Liga outfit did not wait for him during the summer transfer window. He also said that his relationship with Conte did not start well because the former Italy boss knew that he wanted to leave the club.
"Atletico knows I have a special feeling for the team, I lived the best moment of my career there. El Cholo (Diego Simeone) knows it wasn't impossible for me to come back to Atletico," said Costa in an interview with a local Spanish media outlet.
"The relationship with Conte didn't start well because when he arrived I told him I wanted to go to Atletico. Chelsea's fans love me a lot, even more than in Atletico, figure that," he said. "I've done everything to come back to Atletico Madrid but I wouldn't fight the same to return. When Atletico didn't wait for me, I had to go to Conte with the tail between my legs."
What happened turned out to be great for Costa, Conte, and Chelsea as the team is now on top of the Premier League standings with only 10 matches to go. Costa has been Conte's best attacker and goal scorer throughout the season with 17 goals in 26 English top-flight appearances so far.
Costa then said that he is happy at Chelsea and he intends to complete his current contract with the club. "Right now I am good at Chelsea... I have two years left on my contract and I intend to fulfill them," he said.
