NFL Draft Rumors: Pittsburgh Steelers Looking at Joshua Dobbs, Patrick Mahomes as Big Ben's Heir Apparent?
As part of their search for Ben Roethlisberger's future replacement, the Pittsburgh Steelers will take a closer look at two prospects in the 2017 NFL Draft. Quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes of Texas Tech and Joshua Dobbs of Tennessee will visit the Steelers along with two receivers.
According to Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, the Steelers will also meet with receivers Kenny Golloday of Northern Illinois and Joshua Reynolds of Texas A&M. NFL teams are allowed to bring 30 college prospects to their facilities over the next three weeks before the 2017 Draft.
This will be the second time that the Steelers will be taking a closer look at the two quarterbacks. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin attended Tennessee's pro day last week, while offensive coordinator, Todd Haley, was present for Texas Tech's pro day.
Mahomes is touted as a first-round prospect by many analysts. The 22-year-old threw for 5,052 yards with 41 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for Texas Tech last season.
Dobbs, for his part, has been dubbed by NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks as this year's Dak Prescott. Brooks said Dobbs is a potential middle-round QB who could exceed expectations in the NFL. Dobbs threw for 2,291 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions and ran for 671 yards last season.
After Roethlisberger turned 35 last month, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said the team have stepped up their efforts in scouting quarterbacks in recent years. The Steelers expect Roethlisberger to be back for the 2017 season after hinting at retirement after losing to the New England Patriots in the NFC Championship Game.
As insurance, the Steelers have signed backup Landry Jones to a two-year deal worth $4.4 million. According to reports, the contract has guaranteed money of $600,000.
Golloday and Reynolds are considered mid-round prospects. Last season, Golloday had 87 catches for 1,156 yards and 18 touchdowns while Reynolds had 61 receptions for 1,039 yards and 12 touchdowns.
