WWE Rumors: The Undertaker Wanted John Cena to Retire Him, Not Roman Reigns
The Undertaker seemingly wrestled his final match and retired at WrestleMania 33 after losing to Roman Reigns. According to the latest WWE rumors, "The Deadman" wanted his retirement match against John Cena and not Reigns.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that The Undertaker wanted to face Cena at WrestleMania 33. However, WWE chairman Vince McMahon shut down the idea because he wanted "The Phenom" to face "The Big Dog," per Sportskeeda.
The logic behind McMahon's decision was that he was thinking long-term rather than short-term. It should be noted that Cena is now an official part-time superstar and it's only a matter of time before he goes to Hollywood full time.
On the other hand, The Undertaker wanted to fulfill one of the remaining dream matches of his career. But since it would not happen, he went on to face Reigns and it was set up at the Royal Rumble. Nevertheless, The Undertaker went out like a true legend and his contributions to wrestling are not going to be forgotten.
As for Reigns, he is the next face of the WWE and the guy McMahon wants to represent his company. The Undertaker went out on his back and put over the younger guy. It will help Reigns in the future, as he is rumored to be main eventing WrestleMania 34 against Brock Lesnar.
In an interview with ESPN, "The Guy" bragged about taking The Undertaker's yard, but he was also very sad to retire a legendary superstar. He noted that he is just doing his job but he has a lot of respect for The Undertaker.
"It's bittersweet. It almost feels like a loss, you know what I mean? Because I've said this for the past three or four weeks, I've got nothing but respect for the Undertaker. If you've been a part of this business, and you know, everybody's got respect for that man," Reigns said.
