New England Patriots Rumors: Pats Not Aware of Rob Gronkowski's WrestleMania 33 Appearance?
New England Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski was present in last Sunday' WrestleMania 33 wherein he tackled WWE superstar Jinder Mahal. Some fans were shocked that the Patriots allowed "Gronk" to get physical, considering that he only played in eight games last season due injury.
Gronkowski is a big fan of the WWE and he is good friends with current WWE superstar Mojo Rawley, who was a defensive linesman at the University of Maryland. Rawley was also signed by the Green Bay Packers and Arizona Cardinals, but he was not able to make it to the NFL.
At WrestleMania 33, the Patriots star TE was at ringside to cheer for his friend at the 4th Annual Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. Rawley was in the final three with Mahal and NXT star Killian Dain when he was thrown out through the middle ropes.
Mahal attacked Rawley in front of Gronkowski and he proceeded to taunt the two-time Super Bowl champion. He even poured water on the face of "Gronk" that prompted his in-ring debut and WrestleMania moment, as recapped by WWE.com.
Gronkowski jumped the barricade and entered the ring. He tackled Mahal out of his boots that led to Rawley eliminating both Mahal and Dain to win the 4th Annual Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. The two friends celebrated in the ring, cherishing their WrestleMania moment.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Gronkowski was cleared by doctors to get physical inside the WWE ring. He also noted that "Gronk" got permission from the Patriots front office and Bill Belichick, who many believed threw a tantrum when he saw his star tight end in a wrestling ring.
The 27-year-old NFL star was hampered by several injuries last season including a strained hamstring, a pulmonary contusion and a herniated disc. He underwent back surgery last fall, but he was deemed fit enough to get physical at WrestleMania 33.
