NFL Trade Rumors: New England Patriots Parting Ways with Jimmy Garoppolo to Get 2017 First-Rounder
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is a master when it comes to shocking roster moves. He may have a trade up his sleeve to help them move up in the 2017 NFL Draft. This could involve quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo who was a hot topic in rumors this offseason.
In a report by The Washington Post earlier this April, it was suggested that Belichick and the Patriots should move Garoppolo. They might him to the Cleveland Browns to get the No. 12 pick in the draft. As of this moment, New England is not on the board until the third round (72nd overall).
This is a brilliant move for the Patriots if ever they consider it. They value Garoppolo, and Belichick has tremendous belief in him. But with Tom Brady still lording over the quarterback position, it might be best for them to let him go and send him to a team that will give him his chance to shine while getting something valuable in return.
Cleveland is a team that can do more than grant Garoppolo his opportunity to shine. The Browns badly need a starting quarterback and the 25-year-old is viewed by many as the answer to this dilemma. Brock Osweiler and Cody Kessler are on the roster, but both have issues. Osweiler struggled last season and was unimpressive, while Kessler is still a newbie in the NFL.
The Browns own the top pick and they can use it to select a quarterback. However, it is expected for them to go with defensive end Myles Garrett.
In exchange for Garoppolo, the Patriots will get that valuable asset, which is the 12th overall pick. A few more picks may be included to match Garoppolo's value. But what matters is that first-round pick, which will help New England address other issues, like the cornerback position.
