NBA Playoffs 2017: Who Can Stop a 'Robot' Kawhi Leonard? Grizzlies Still Searching for Answers

By Joe Bacaron, Posted: 04/21/17 01:11PM EDT

Kahwi Leonard is all but impossible to stop in the 2017 NBA playoffs as he averages over 34 points a game on amazing 71% shooting. He's so cold-blooded, in fact, that Memphis Grizzlies coach David Fizdale called him a "robot," and nobody was a bit surprised.

In the two games against the Grizzlies, Kawhi Leonard is averaging 34.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.0 steals in 36 minutes. He's also hitting 100% of his free throws, which is remarkable considering his suspect shooting coming into the league at in the 15th in the 2011 NBA draft.

Speaking to reporters following the game 2 loss, coach Fizdale could only marvel at the 6-7 forward for his assassin mentality and stoic nature. "He was standing next to me the other night and he wasn't breathing. He wasn't breathing," he quipped." So I'm gonna check the rulebook to see if robots are able to play in the NBA, because somehow Pop and them have figured out, they know something I don't know. I think he bleeds antifreeze or something."

He should not have been surprised. While the rest of the NBA were gushing about Russell Westbrook's historic triple-double average this season, and James Harden numbers with the Houston Rockets, Leonard has been quietly inserting himself in the MVP discussion. More importantly, the San Antonio Spurs won back-to-back 60 games for the season despite the loss of Tim Duncan.

In addition, Tony Allen-the Grizzlies prime defender-is not likely to return due to injury. And an old Vince Carter trying to stay in front of Leonard is somewhat laughable if it's not so tragic.

Speaking of Fizdale, he's being fined for $30,000 by the NBA for criticizing the officiating of Bill Spooner, Danny Crawford and Rodney Mott in the playoff match against the Spurs. He said that it's "unacceptable" that Zach Randolph had zero free-throw attempts compared to Leonard's 19 trips to the charity stripe.
