NBA Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers Should Trade for Carmelo Anthony?
Carmelo Anthony is just about done with the New York Knicks. Even Phil Jackson president said that the 6-foot-8 forward may be better off somewhere else. So why not the Los Angeles Lakers?
Lakers blog Silverscreenandroll noted that Magic Johnson and general manager Rob Pelinka has been given a gift when Jackson basically announced that Anthony is on the trading block. It is because the Knicks just sounded desperate.
However, two things may complicate the possible trade. One, Anthony's contract is a massive $124 million and also includes a no-trade clause; although, it's not likely that the burly scorer will exercise that right when he's traded to the Lakers. Second, Magic Johnson is not bent on breaking up the core of D'Angelo Russell, Brandon Ingram, Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr.
Anthony is currently embroiled in a scandal when he allegedly gotten his side chick, a stripper, pregnant. His wife, La La, split town and the two have agreed that she will get custody of their 10-year-old son.
But former Laker John Salley said that Anthony should seek a fresh start somewhere, and the Lakers could be a viable destination. The Purple in Gold is no stranger to controversy, with the rape case leveled against Kobe Bryant for instance. And because of Hollywood, he is not going to be judged for sleeping around.
Magic Johnson has never made it a secret that their plan this offseason is to bring in a superstar. Although the Lakers improved this season -- 26 wins against last year's 17 -- it is still not enough.
But will Anthony be that kind of superstar who can lead the team to a championship? Plus there are rumors that Paul George wants to be a Laker badly. There's also the fact that the Knicks forward is set to make $27 million next season, and the Purple and Gold is already over the cap.
