NFL Trade Rumors: Cleveland Browns Turn Down Chance to Acquire New England Patriots Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo
The Cleveland Browns will rely on the current quarterbacks they have, and perhaps the 2017 NFL Draft. This is after team vice president Sashi Brown shut down the idea of them trading for a quarterback this offseason. The name often linked to them when it comes to this matter is Jimmy Garoppolo of the New England Patriots.
As reported by NFL.com, Brown was asked in a press conference Wednesday if the Browns are thinking of trading for a quarterback. Brock Osweiler, Cody Kessler, and Kevin Hogan are already in Cleveland, but it is expected for them to add one more.
"Could we in theory? Yes, but are we planning on it or is that the plan? No," Brown answered according to the report. This statement would likely slow down the rumors connecting the Browns to the Patriots' Garoppolo. Tom Brady's backup is still viewed by some as the best answer to the team's longtime dilemma of having no quality starting quarterback.
There were even trade talks suggesting that the Browns could give up their No. 12 pick to the Patriots for Garoppolo. The reigning champions will not select until the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. That is why a deal like this could help them big time.
However, with Brown walking away from the possibility of trading for a quarterback, the chances of Garoppolo heading to Cleveland now decreased. If the Browns will pass on the opportunity to complete an exchange, then it is likely that they will acquire another passer through the draft. Instead of giving away their other first-rounder (12th pick), they can use it to address the position. This year's pool of quarterback prospects is unlike the ones in previous years, but still, there are those who stand out.
