NBA Rumors: 3 Potential Destinations For Kristaps Porzingis If Knicks Lose Their Mind
Kristaps Porzingis was deemed untouchable by the New York Knicks last season. However, the protests made by Porzingis about the Phil Jackson regime open up the possibility of him getting traded. The Knicks are crazy to even think about trading the 21-year-old star but it could happen.
Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical first reported the unhappiness of Porzingis with the Knicks and Jackson. He skipped the team's exit interview while also planning to spend more time in Latvia rather than learn more about the triangle offense in New York.
In a recent interview with the New York Post, Porzingis made it clear that he is happy in New York and he wants to stay with the Knicks. However, he also avoided a Jackson-related question and reiterated his stance against the team's rebuilding plans because he hates losing.
"No one's comfortable with losing. If it means going in the right direction and doing the right thing, let's do that. But just having no idea the direction, then it's not going to work out. The direction has to be clear what we want to do," Porzingis said.
If Jackson decides to rebuild and the future of the franchise does not want to be part of it, he would surely entertain the idea of trading him for a handful of assets. But of course, the Knicks need Porzingis and it's highly unlikely that they are going to deal him this offseason.
However, the Knicks have no direction so a Porzingis trade is not out of the question. Here are the three potential destinations for the Latvian unicorn if Jackson and the Knicks lose their minds and trade Porzingis. Disclaimer, these are just suggestions and no reports have officially confirmed if Porzingis is on the trade block.
The most obvious team that can acquire Porzingis is the Celtics since they have the best collection of draft picks and young players in the league. Boston can offer a package of Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown and either the 2017 or 2018 first round pick from the Brooklyn Nets.
The Celtics get their third star to pair with Isaiah Thomas and Al Horford, while also adding someone who can shoot threes and protect the rim. On the other hand, the Knicks acquire the potential first overall pick in this year or next year's draft, a defensive-minded guard and an athletic wing ready to take over from Carmelo Anthony, who could also be on his way out of New York this summer.
The Timberwolves were one of the disappointing teams this season, but they can improve their chances next year if they can pair Karl-Anthony Towns with Porzingis. The Knicks might be willing to accept an offer consisting of the 2017 first round pick, Andrew Wiggins and Ricky Rubio.
New York gets their defensive-minded playmaker and a free-scoring wing while also getting a potential top five pick from a loaded draft class. As for the Timberwolves, they can finally give the keys to Kris Dunn, gets a healthy Zach LaVine coming back and the twin tower of Towns and Porzingis.
Los Angeles Lakers
Just like the Knicks, the Lakers have a lot of questions this offseason under the regime of Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka. The Lakers are open to anything and they might be willing to acquire a player like Porzingis. They can offer D'Angelo Russell and Julius Randle in exchange for the Latvian star.
The Lakers retain their first round pick this year and draft a point guard to replace Russell. They get a star in Porzingis and pair him with Ivica Zubac and Brandon Ingram in the frontcourt. On the other hand, the Knicks get a point guard and power forward as pillars for the future while also adding another talent with their own draft pick this year.
