MLB Rumors: New York Yankees Could Have a Firesale at the Trade Deadline if Hot Start Fades
The New York Yankees are tied with the Baltimore Orioles for the best record in the AL East. The Yankees are off to a hot start that makes everyone wonder about their plans at the trade deadline. Will they acquire players to contend or trade veterans to further improve their farm system?
The Yankees are surprisingly one of the best teams after the first month of the 2017 MLB season with 15-8 record. Their rotation is holding up despite early struggles from Masahiro Tanaka, but it's their offense that has the entire league talking.
However, the Yankees are not supposed to be this good and they were not considered serious playoff contenders at the end of the season. The team is still in rebuilding mode with several prospects ready to be called up later this year.
According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Yankees are going to have a firesale of veterans at the deadline, especially if they start losing games. Heyman noted that players like Chase Headley, Brett Gardner, Starlin Castro, Jacoby Ellsbury and Didi Gregorius could get traded this season.
"They look better than most folks figured, but if they slide a bit, Chase Headley, Brett Gardner and Starlin Castro could go back on the market (and if he keeps hitting, maybe Jacoby Ellsbury could, too). And who knows, if they think uber prospect Gleyber Torres looks ready at some point this year, what's to prevent them from shopping Didi Gregorius?" Heyman reported.
Headley, Gardner, Castro and Ellsbury are all having a great start to the season and they will have great value to legit contenders at the deadline. On the other hand, Gregorius was only mentioned because of the development of Torres, who is the second-best prospect in the entire MLB this season, per MLB.com.
Gregorius missed the first month of the season due to a shoulder injury, but he had a career year last season. He is still signed through the 2019 season but Torres' rapid development could force the Yankees' hands to move on from Gregorius this season or in the winter.
