MLB Rumors: New York Yankees Will Trade For Starting Pitching in July if Hot Start Continues
The New York Yankees are still riding their hot streak more than a month into the 2017 MLB season. They have the best record in the American League at the moment and they could target starting pitching in July to solidify their lineup heading into the postseason.
The Yankees are currently in first place in the AL East standings after going 8-2 in the last ten games, per MLB.com. The starting pitching is very consistent, while the offense is still on a hot streak. Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia and Michael Pineda are solid anchors to the rotation that also boasts Luis Severino and Jordan Montgomery.
On the other hand, the bullpen duo of Aroldis Chapman and Dellin Betances is among the best in the MLB. The Yankees' offense is doing well without Didi Gregorius and Gary Sanchez, who are both injured to start the season.
Aaron Judge is showing his power while veterans Starlin Castro, Brett Gardner and Matt Holliday are off to a hot start. The Yankees were supposed to be in a rebuilding process, but they surprisingly got to a great start and they might as well ride it to the playoffs.
However, the rotation can still improve and it's something the Yankees front office headed by Brian Cashman will prioritize at the trade deadline. According to Gary Phillips of FanRag Sports, the Yankees are expected to acquire a top pitcher if they are in the thick of the race for a playoff spot.
Phillips noted that the Yankees' farm system is loaded that they can trade for a top pitcher without sacrificing prospects like Gleyber Torres, Justus Sheffield and Clint Frazier. They can part ways with top talents such as Jorge Mateo, Blake Rutherford, Dustin Fowler and Miguel Andujar to acquire a starter.
Some of the potential top targets for the Yankees include Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers, Chris Archer of the Tampa Bay Rays, Gerrit Cole of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jose Quintana of the Chicago White Sox and Sonny Gray of the Oakland Athletics. If they cannot get a deal done for anyone of those aces, the Yankees can turn their attention to cheap options like Jason Vargas, Ian Kennedy, Ervin Santana and Matt Garza.
