De La Hoya: Floyd Mayweather Should Fight Triple G-Canelo Alvarez Winner, Not Conor McGregor
Oscar De La Hoya called out Floyd Mayweather who is reportedly in negotiations with UFC superstar Conor McGregor for a megafight. The Golden Boy Promotions CEO said that the undefeated boxer should look somewhere else if he decides to come back.
"Forget about Conor McGregor, he has no experience in the boxing ring," the former Olympian told TMZ. "Mayweather is way better than that. Mayweather, he's the best of the best. Mayweather should go after the winner of Canelo-Triple G."
De La Hoya was referring to Saul Canelo Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) and Gennady Golovkin (49-1-1, 34 KOs) who will reportedly fight in September or December this year if the two camps can agree to the terms.
The 44-year-old, however, clarified that there's no serious talks about Mayweather fighting his ward, Canelo Alvarez. "But I'd be willing to sit down with him because Mayweather, common, he's better than fighting a guy who's zero and zero," he added.
Alvarez has taken a lot of lumps for leaving the middleweight division, purportedly because he was scared of Golovkin. For his part, the Mexican insisted that leaving the division was always a business decision.
However, during his win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. this past weekend, the Mexican and the Ukrainian faced each other in the ring as they were interviewed by Max Kellerman. And it appears that some bad blood is brewing. When Golovkin was asked what his last message for Alvarez is, he replied, "Good luck." The Mexican then replied, "Luck for the mediocre."
Meanwhile, Alvarez's trainer Eddy Reynoso insisted that Golovkin is not unbeatable and his ward is just the person to knock the Ukrainian out. He observed that Triple G has no defense and always comes forward, which makes him vulnerable.
"No doubt Saul has the talent to stop Gennady," he said. "He has good defense, he fights very well going backwards - and we are sure that with a great preparation and his talent, we can beat him."
