Fighting in Kell Brook’s Home Turf Doesn’t Bother Errol Spence; 8 Oz. Gloves Definitely an Advantage
Only two weeks to go before the Kell Brook and Errol Spence fight in Brammal Lane in Sheffield on May 27. But fighting in his opponent's home turf doesn't scare the American one bit as he thinks the 8-ounce gloves will be to his advantage.
This will be the first time for Spence (21-0, 18 KOs), a Long Island native, to fight in the UK. The only overseas bout he participated in was a technical knockout win against Chris van Heerden in Toronto, Canada on Sept. 11, 2015.
Brook, meanwhile, is the more veteran of the two with 36 wins under his belt, along with 25 KOs. The only loss came against Gennady Golovkin when he was stopped by the Ukrainian in September last year. The 31-year-old boxer also fought twice on US soil before.
"With eight ounce gloves I feel that I can knock him out but it's not something that I have to have to win the fight," Spence said. "I'm not just going to look for it, I'll let it happen and let it flow and if it happens naturally, then I'll take the knockout."
He also said that he's not worried about the judges being influenced by the hometown crowd because he has no control over that. But he's praying that the judges will be fair because he can definitely outpoint Brook if it comes to that.
Meanwhile, Brook said that it's a dream come true to be fighting in Bramall Lane in front of his family and friends. For now, he's very happy to be representing his country in one of the biggest fights in the welterweight division today. "On May 27, I'm going to show the world that I'm the best welterweight on the planet and I'm going to do it right before my people's eyes," he said.
