NFL News: Door of Opportunity Again Slammed Shut on Free Agent Quarterback Colin Kaepernick
Free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick just cannot catch a break this year. He recently had a glimmer of hope when the Seattle Seahawks reached out to him. Unfortunately, it seems like they have no plans of signing him to a contract.
Seattle badly needs a backup quarterback with Trevone Boykin getting involved in a couple of legal issues this offseason. The search started a few days ago and one of the top candidates was Kaepernick. Many believed the former San Francisco 49ers star had a legitimate chance, but perhaps the Seahawks thought otherwise.
According to The Seattle Times, Pat Kirwan revealed Tuesday that the Seahawks are unlikely giving Kaepernick a deal. This could be true because Kirwan may have knowledge of what is happening within the organization. The report mentioned that he is really close with the team's head coach, Pete Carroll, who he worked with in the past.
As of this moment, no one from Seattle is commenting about the matter. It is likely for the Seahawks to remain silent and just surprise everyone when they have chosen a new second-stringer at quarterback.
If Seattle passes on the chance to add Kaepernick, it will be the first team to formally reject him in this year's offseason. Numerous organizations were already linked to the free agent quarterback but so far, it was only the Seahawks who truly took the risk.
Kaepernick's rocky free agency is drawing mixed reactions. Some of his former teammates, coaches, and fellow NFL players are siding with him. They remain confident that he is capable of playing at a high level. Although others, including a handful of league executives, are critical of him due to his political protest last season which they see as a distraction.
