NFL: Oakland Raiders to Make Derek Carr the Richest Quarterback?
Over a week ago, it seemed like the Oakland Raiders and Derek Carr will be unable to reach an agreement for a new contract this offseason. Now, the face of the franchise might be the first ever quarterback in the history of the NFL to be earning $25 million each year.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport recently discussed this possibility on Up to the Minute. Rapoport stated that with the way the negotiation between Oakland and Carr is going, it is "very possible" that the latter will be a $25 million quarterback in the NFL.
This is going to be a massive increase for Carr who is still playing for the Raiders under his cheap rookie contract. Both sides have until July 15 to work out a long-term pact. If nothing is agreed upon, the 26-year-old will have to settle for a $1.15 million salary this 2017 NFL season.
ESPN reported last week that Carr clearly shared what he wants to happen. The quarterback hopes Oakland signs him to a long-term pact before the start of training camp. If the Raiders fail to do this, the talks for a deal will be on hold because he wants to focus on winning.
There are zero worries for Oakland if no lucrative pact is prepared for Carr ahead of camp. The former Fresno State standout expressed a number of times in the past that he aims to stay with the Raiders for the rest of his career.
This is excellent news for Oakland since there will be no pressure, unlike what other teams are experiencing when it comes to signing their star players. The Raiders can take their time in coming up with a contract that would reward the franchise quarterback who helped them regain prominence and be playoff contenders.
