Intel Core i9-7900X 10-Core, 20-Thread Processor Overclocked Breaches 5.0GHz Mark

One of Intel processors based on Skylake architecture which is coming out this June shows very promising speed according to recent overclocking tests. The 10-core, 20-thread Intel Core i9-7900X has reportedly breached 5GHz.

WCCFTech recently featured a video (watch video below) uploaded by an overclocker named Der8auer who was one of the first who got their hands dirty with the 10-core, 20-thread Intel Core i9-7900X. This 10-core chip comes with a total of 13.75MB L3 cache, 10MB L2 cache tagged at 3.3GHz base clock. With Intel's Turbo 2.0, the process kicks to 4.3GHz boost and even reaches 4.5GHz clock with Intel Turbo 3.0.

Intel Core i9-7900X Hits 4.8GHz and 5GHz

The overclocking demo by Der8auer hit 4.8GHz using the stock CPU across all 10 cores and 20 threads. While Corsair AIO 280 liquid cooler was used, it did nothing extraordinary. As suggested, liquid cooling is still the main option among HEDT enthusiasts.

After the chip was removed with stock thermal paste and replaced with Liquid Metal, it pushed the CPU to run at 5GHz on all 10 cores and 20 threads. It is suggested that should the test went further from 88 to 91 degrees Celsius running a custom loop water cooling solution then it could reach up to 5.1GHz.

According to The Motley Fool, Intel Core i9-7900X is part of the three tranche release of Intel for this year. The Skylake-based processors with 6-, 8-, and 10-core are expected to be shipped to customers who made pre-orders before June ends. The 12-core model is scheduled by August, while the 14-, 16-, and 18-core models will become available in October.
