NVIDIA News: Tips to Lower Power Usage on EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

High performance means higher power target, which easily translates to higher power consumption, thus, higher monthly bill. Yet recently, there was a trick which made it possible to achieve higher performance using lower power consumption.

According to Nick Kirsch of Legit Reviews who performed some testing on the EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 FTW+ 6GB video card using Claymore's Dual Ethereum AMD+NVIDIA GPU Miner v9.5, pursuing this line gives some interesting results. The figures below were derived from the EVGA Precision X OC utility after overclocking the memory on the EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 from an effective rate of 8,000 MHz all the way up to 10,000 MHz:

Here is where the fun begins. Based from the hash rate mining Ethereum which went from 18.88 MH/s to 23.61 MH/s, the GeForce GTX 1060 was only using 100W to 113W with temperatures at 70C. The adjustment now is made on the 6GB GDDR5 memory which already reached the 10,000 MHz barrier. Thus, the trick is to lower it down to 9,500 MHz which is still considered as rock solid.

With the adjustment made to lower the power target, the test showed significant decrease in power usage from 110 Watts of power at 22.8 MH/s to just ~65 Watts of power at 22.1 MH/s. While lowering the power target have a slight performance hit, this process gives roughly 0.5 MH/s, cutting the power usage by about 45W. Here is the complete result:

Almost a year after the release of GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, it would be hard to find some stocks on retail stores. Thankfully, it is still available at Amazon.
