MLB Trade Rumors: Detroit Tigers Ace Justin Verlander Downplays Recent Talks; Chicago Cubs Interested
Some of the biggest MLB trade rumors feature Detroit Tigers righty, Justin Verlander. Despite this, Verlander remains committed to helping Detroit and is paying no mind to the talks linking him to different clubs, like the Chicago Cubs.
"I'd say (trade rumors) are in the background. My focus is here and now. If there's a decision to be made, then Al and I will talk about (waiving the no-trade). I'm not thinking about anything other than pitching and playing for the Detroit Tigers until - or if - anything happens," Verlander said recently according to The Detroit News.
The Tigers have struggled this 2017 MLB season. They are currently fourth in the American League Central with a 37-45 record, just half a game ahead of the Chicago White Sox (36-45) who hold the last spot in the division.
Perhaps this is the reason for Detroit's inclusion in trade rumors. The Tigers can improve their roster ahead of the deadline which is on July 31. One of the players viewed as an asset is Verlander, who similar to his club, is having a hard time in the present campaign. In 17 appearances, the 34-year-old has an ERA of 4.96.
However, as mentioned, Verlander is not that worried when it comes to trade rumors. Perhaps this is because of the no-trade clause in his contract. But still, it is possible for Detroit to deal him away. Although if the Tigers do, the Boston Globe mentioned that they should "eat quite a bit of Verlander's contract."
The Cubs are interested in Verlander according to reports. Chicago is doing great this season and is second in the National League Central with a 41-42 record, 3.5 games away from the division leaders Milwaukee Brewers (46-40). As of this moment, there is no trade negotiation yet between the Tigers and Cubs.
